The foundation of a Brent Faiyaz type beat lies in its chord progressions. Use minor seventh and ninth chords to create smooth, jazzy textures characteristic of Brent Faiyaz’s style. For example, in D# minor, progressions like D#m7 - G#m9 - A#m7 add emotional depth and a soulful feel. Keep the progression subtle and repetitive to maintain a hypnotic groove.

2. Incorporate Clean and Ambient Instrumentation
Instruments such as clean electric guitar with light reverb and delay effects are essential. They provide the warm, intimate vibe that Brent Faiyaz’s music often features. Pads and analog synths add atmosphere and space without overwhelming the mix. Prodbyoluwi offers free analog Lab presets to help producers craft these ambient textures (free presets).
3. Design Minimalistic but Punchy Drums
Drum patterns should be sparse yet groovy. Use soft kicks, crisp snares or rimshots, and subtle hi-hats with occasional rolls for rhythmic interest. Avoid overly complex drum fills; the focus is on maintaining a laid-back rhythm that supports the melody and vocals.
4. Create a Melancholic Mood with Vocal Samples or Effects
Brent Faiyaz’s beats often include atmospheric vocal chops or effects that add emotional layers. These can be lightly processed with reverb and delay to blend into the background. If you have access to vocal samples, chopping and pitching them to complement the key can elevate the beat’s mood.
5. Mix and Arrange for Dynamic Flow
Arrange your beat to have distinct sections such as intro, verse, chorus, and bridge with smooth transitions. Use automation on effects like filters and reverbs to keep the listener engaged. Mixing should emphasize clarity, especially on guitars and vocals, while keeping the bass warm and present. Prodbyoluwi’s “Cold Toronto” beat demonstrates these arrangement and mixing principles well.
